Timothy E. Quill, M.D. received his
undergraduate degree from Amherst College (1971) and his M.D. from
the University of Rochester (1976). He completed his Internal
Medicine residency in 1979 and a Fellowship in Med/Psych Liaison in
1981, both from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and
Dentistry.
Currently, Dr. Quill is the Associate Chief of Medicine at the
Genesee Hospital, a Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at the
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and a
primary care internist in Rochester, New York. He also directs the
University of Rochester's Program for Biopsychosocial Studies and
its Fellowship in Advanced Biopsychosocial Studies.
He has published and lectured widely about aspects of the
doctor-patient relationship, including partnerships, communication,
barriers, delivering bad news and somatization. He has focused
extensively on end-of-life decision making, authoring the books
DEATH AND DIGNITY: Making Choices and Taking Charge (W.W. Norton,
1993) and A MIDWIFE THROUGH THE DYING PROCESS: Stories of Healing
and Hard Choices of Life (Johns Hopkins, 1996).
Dr. Quill has written articles for scholarly journals such as the
New England Journal of Medicine, New York Journal of
Medicine, and Annuals of Interim Medicine as well as
The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and
others. In addition, he has been interviewed by all the major
networks and has been featured on "Frontline",
"Dateline", "20/20", "Nightline" and other
news-related programs.
